Already at the beginning of city creation, the founder
issued a document (dating 1902), where we can read what
follows: "Crystal clear air, soaked with balsamic
resin, with the aromas of fields and meadows, quiet whisper
of coniferous forests... Deep, clear river jeziorka and
the picturesque stream Wierzbna - that's what Konstancin
got from Mother Nature." About the features of Konstancin
- its landscape, stylish architecture and medical features
wrote the following papers: "Kurier Warszawski",
"Tygodnik Ilustrowany", "Wie¶ Ilustrowana".
The creators of Konstancin's stylish architecture, including
the famous Casino and English park, was lead by the family
of Warsaw and Konstancin builders - the counts Collona-Czosnowskis
- Wladysław, the father and his sons - Bronisław, architect
and Tadeusz - engineer. It's worth quoting here what was
printed in "Wie¶ Ilustrowana" in 1910: "The
landscape, features and comfort put Konstancin in the
lead, and as medical authorities claim - the settlement
has all that' needed to become a climating station and
a spa...". Those medica authorities were the members
of The Board of Society: dr. Roman Skowroński and dr.
The stylish architecture was the reason why Konstancin
got its nickname: Graden-City. Beside the elegant, private
mansions, new pensions like "Biruta", "leliwa",
"Kaprys" or "Mon Repos" with spa aspirations
became the unique monemental set of Konstancin after it
was designated a spa status in 1917.
During the first years of 20th century the spa of Dr.
Frenkel is created in Chylice, called "Hugonówka".
The entertaining functions were taken over by the famous
"Casino", located on the sandy beach of Jeziorka.
All the combined features of Konstancin made it quite
popular among the local and not only people and it soon
became very fashionable place to visit.
There were more and more people of art and culture in
the city, besides the usual government VIPs, industrial
lords and diplomats. Those latter often called the place
"Konstancin les Bains" - Konstancin Spa.
The artistic traditions were established since 1903 by
Aleksander Mann - an aknowledged painter and his wife
Janina - a poet; also by Adam Karasiński - a musician,
Ludomir Różycki - a composer, The Karnickis family - musicians
and singers, Zdzisław Jasiński - a paniter, Stanisław
Jackowski - a sculptor. In 1927 a Home for retired Actors
is established in Skolimów.
During the 20's Stefan Żeromski lived and worked here;
in the 30's it was Wacław G±siorowski. That's where the
famous academic settlement of the name of Kasa Mianowski
was held in villa "Anna". Wacław G±siorowski
was also an exceptional host of Konstancin, being its
administrator - he undertook the loan to develop the area
of Konstancin-Skolimów Common. He and the reknown doctor,
Bronisław Wajnert, the owner of villa "Szumin"
were the initiators of Konstancin's evelopment toward
spa. The plan the forelaid was made official in 1938.
The outbreak of World War II put an end to those intentions.
During the war higher officers and rulers of Reich resided
in the area. The inhabitants were repressed and displaced.
The only hope was brought by the partisans of AK.
After the Warsaw Uprising eneded, Konstancin became a
huge common bedroom of those who fled the ruined Warsaw.
The monuments of the city were much devastated at that
Many famous medical authorities moved here and started
rising new medical centers and hospitals to replace those
ruined in Warsaw. The fames coming to Konstancin included
among others: prof. Filiński, prof. Weiss.
